Colors are the first thing that catches the eye of many when one sees the Chingay Parade for the very first time. “This year is actually like a rainbow,” said Ms. Seri Idayu. The overall theme for this year’s parade is “Colors in Harmony”  and it was expressed through all the various performers dressed up in colorful costumes and floats coming together.

The Chingay parade held annually is one of the largest street performances and float parades in the whole of Asia. This year’s parade was once again held at the F1 pit building on 31 January and 01 February 2020.

This year’s parade is yet more unique and special as it is co-presenting the People’s parade that showcases the community building that we Singaporeans have. The parade has 6,000 volunteer performers as well as the involvement of 150 organizations showcasing our racial harmony and rich multiethnic way of life.

Singaporeans from all walks of life come together as one to march together as Singapore in this year’s Chingay Parade. The colors complemented each other and were harmonious similar to the performers who had spent months rehearsing for the event. People of all ages, races, and genders performed together in harmony.

Although this event is carried out around Chinese New Year, the dazzling event is celebrated by the Chinese, Indians, Malays and Eurasians alike. This iconic event is a colorful showcase of our country’s multicultural society.

“Unity for me is when everybody let say, collaborate. So, they ignore each other’s races and religion and, since we are at Chingay now, perform together without caring about any of those things.” Said Mr. Mohammad Farouq, a performer from the segment of Strength in Unity.

A performance that represented unity was the “Strength in Unity” performance. The performers used bamboo poles as props in their performance.

Bamboos are known to represent strength and harmony. The bamboos and the performance truly symbolized the unity that not only the performers had among themselves but the unity that we, as Singaporeans, have as a whole as well.

In the final segment of the parade, the performers marched together to the theme song “ Colors in Harmony ”. People danced and had fun together forgetting all the differences and stereotypes that people had against each other. Although the whole parade showcased the Singaporean spirit, the segment truly embodied what it means to be a Singaporean.

The parade flaunts our Singaporean culture to anyone who sees the parade as well as to the whole world.Just like the lyrics from the theme song, “Our Picture forms a Symphony That tells the world our Story”.
